Curiosity

We have two rescue dogs that we got about three years ago AND now that we are well past the puppy stages, I can thankfully say they are good dogs. When we first brought home the chickens, the dogs were highly curious... and I, as the mom, was highly nervous. I was confident that they would not hurt the chickens on purpose, but the picture in my head was of an excited puppy with clumsy feet stomping on the ground, and maybe a chick would meet her demise underfoot. THANKFULLY, with a bit of control and the smell of treats in my hand, the first meeting of the new siblings went well orchestrated. The picture attached is of just that. Up until this point, the babies had been in our "spare" room and the dogs had not yet seen them... just smelled and heard.
This is a lovely reminder of beautiful summer days...watching new chicks, peck, scratch, eat grass and enjoy the warm sunshine. It was fun to watch them explore...Id imagine my joy was similar to a new moms enjoyment in watching her new baby discover new things day to day. NOT that baby chicks are in any way the same as raising human babies...but they are still babies non the less.

Birds of a Frizzled Feather

Charmin, our Frizzle... is the most loving hen we have. This morning as I tossed scratch to the ground...she chirped and peeped and run inbetween my feet and stood there...watching the other hens inhale the scratch. I threw some down by Charmin so she could enjoy too. She always comes running up to me when I come into their yard... such a sweet girl.
Chickens make awesome pets. They provide u with entertainment and a rainbow of personality. Some love you...some hate you...but they are all always excited when I bring them treats like RAISINS! They will rip your finger off if you dont throw down those raisins fast enough.
Eggs are the bonus for early morning wake up calls and late nite "tuck in's".
Speaking of eggs, Im thinking coffee and french toast in the morning... courtsey of Muddy Lantern's Backyard flock... thanks ladies. Ill be sure to bring you a raisin later today!

Evergreen Beauty

One thing is for sure.... Im very thankful for growing up in the Pacific Northwest. We have mountains a couple hours to the North and East and the ocean a couple hours to the West! If you are an outdoorsie...this is a great place to live!

My snow.....

I wish for snow. The weatherman, however, has different ideas... like rain. I hate it when people complain about the rain. It seems like around here... people complain no matter what kind of weather it is.
During this last summer... we had some hot H O T days. 105degrees and for here...thats horribly uncomfortable. People complained and so did I. And its so funny, because I think some people actually believe that the meterologists are IN control of the weather.
When BEAUTIFUL Autumn comes calling and brings those grey clouds that blanket our NW..people complain. TOO MUCH RAIN they say... People please. Accept it... OR MOVE:) I say that with a light heart. Those giant puddles in the middle of the street are calling my rubber boots!
And yes, when it snows...people complain. I on the otherhand, think the snow falling is beautiful. I love how it insulates the world...and brightens the nights. How it gently covers the evergreen branches and makes our dogs want to run outside and play... play they do and of course stop mid run for a small snow snack.
I wish for snow, But will most likely, in the morning...reach for my husband's rain coat instead of my flannel shirt as I head out to let those lovely hens into the yard. I'll grab my boots instead of my garden clogs... and pass by the wool hat and scarf... suppose to be in the high 40s... But soon I hope.... snow balls will be flying!

Im hoping for snow again....

Crazy Daze

Please don't think I am crazy, but seriously... so far this new year has been great... and for a few simple reasons. One- Golda, the newest hen to our flock, is finally getting along with everyone. Two- Sophia and Strawberry started laying yesterday. And Three- I was able to collect 15gallons of rain water over the past few days. What an awesome start to 2010:)
Now if only I could find the perfect goat to purchase.
